In case you missed it, climate change is a real problem. We get it, sometimes it can be hard to make environmentally-friendly choices, especially if you’re bombarded with the complete opposite (we’re talking to you big-box conventional grocers).

That’s why we’re on a mission to make it as easy as possible for our customers to make #HealthyConscience decisions that benefit them, their wallets, and the environment. Besides, all our awesomeness wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t doing it in a sustainable way. Here are just 5 of the ways we’re doing our part in keepin’ it green.

Bulk up on the good stuff! Not only does buying in bulk help you save a few dollars, but it can help the environment too. Aside from all of our bulk grains, treats, spices and teas being Certified Organic, you can also bring in your own container to fill up on all of the above. Just weigh your container, bulk it up, cash out and enjoy!

We’ve also been working on expanding on our bulk offerings and are uber excited to have just launched our bulk cleaners at our Junction and Liberty Village stores in Toronto. You can now fill, clean, refill and repeat with a selection of household cleaners like all purpose cleaner, laundry liquid, hand and dish soap. To make it even better, they’re all unscented, Leaping Bunny Certified, and made with plant-based ingredients right here in Canada.

Forgot your reusable bags at home or in the car? Don’t fret. Our plastic alternatives are biodegradable and made from renewable plant starch. In fact, it’s been this way for a few years now (welcome to the party Sobey’s – *eye roll*). Better yet, a portion of the proceeds from our grocery bags go to organizations like Tree Canada and the Canadian Organic Trade Association.

As for plastic packaging in our stores, we are always looking for alternatives and putting pressure on our suppliers to provide better alternatives. But we are happy to say that we’ve been putting in the work to eliminate plastic packaging from our produce section. Say adios to bagged lemons, mushrooms, peppers, and more!

Fun Fact: We actually used to provide customers with paper bags at the cash for years, but after some extensive research we decided to make the switch. Find out why!

We totally encourage customers to bring in their reusable bags but we stepped it up a notch and brought in several alternative options made from jute fibre. Jute fibre is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable, and has a low carbon footprint to produce. In fact, cultivating jute enriches the fertility of the soil for the next crop! Skip the plastic and pick up one of our reusable jute produce bags for a #zerowaste grocery haul.

While introducing sustainable in-store initiatives really gets us hyped up, we’re all about supporting and teaming up with local groups and businesses who’s commitment to sustainability aligns with our own.

Whether it be consumer shows like the Green Living Show, Veg Food Fest, and the Sustainable Block Party, or our own E-waste collection event, we’re always looking for ways we can step it up and provide our customers with other ways to make a difference.

Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to keep up with event announcements and giveaways!
